Learn more about Klaro

Klaro, keeping it clear

My name is Karolien, and I’m the translator behind Klaro. The name reflects my approach: Klaro, which sounds like the Spanish word “claro,” with K as in “klaar,” its Dutch equivalent, or as in Karolien. My life has been a journey between languages and cultures.

I was born in Flanders, studied Romance language and literature, and became a professional translator in Catalonia, a region with two official languages: Catalan and Spanish. Every day, I travel between north and south, between Germanic and Romance languages, always looking for the clearest way to communicate your message.

What do I offer with Klaro?

My specialty is translations tailored to the end reader. A good text, whether a press release, newsletter, website, or technical manual, must be understandable and perfectly adapted to its context.

Professional translations are subject to the same rules as any other well-written text: they must take the reader and the context into account and they must convey the communication aim of the message as clearly as possible.

My methodology

When I begin a new assignment, I first thoroughly educate myself on the topic. I research the appropriate terminology, read related texts, and use the necessary tools to ensure a faithful and accurate translation. I consider the use of machine translation or artificial intelligence as a tool, if it helps me to be more efficient, always communicating openly about it.

My approach

Every translation is more than just transferring words from one language to another. My goal is to ensure that the final text fulfills its purpose, tailored to the reader’s needs and the context in which it will be used. Translation is a multi-faceted profession that not only requires sound grammar, a rich vocabulary and appropriate style, but also a knowledge of the world and of human nature. And there’s currently no automatic translation software out there that can match this knowledge!

Independence with support

As a freelance translator, I have the freedom to adapt to each project, but I also benefit from the support of a professional community. I am a member of the Belgian Chamber of Translators and Interpreters (BKVT) and the Professional Association of Translators and Interpreters of Catalonia (APTIC).

These associations guarantee high standards in the industry and allow me to be in constant contact with other professionals, exchange experiences, and stay up-to date with industry best practices.
